Sapere Conoscere
so (I know) conosco (I know)
sai (you know) conosci (you know)
sa (he/she knows) conosce (he/she knows)
sappiamo (we know) conosciamo (we know)
sapete (you know) conoscete (you know)
sanno (they know) conoscono (they know)
Both sapere and conoscere mean to know, but they refer to different types of
knowledge:
Conoscere: knowing people, places and things
Sapere: knowing facts and skills
Conoscere: people, places and things
Acquaintance/familiarity with:
- people;
- places; or
- things.
Examples
PEOPLE:
Io conosco Roberto. (I know Roberto)
Noi non conosciamo il
figlio di Michiele. (We don’t know
Michele’s son)
PLACES:
Conosco Firenze. Ci
vado ogni anno. (I’m familiar with
Florence. I go there every year).
THINGS:
Conosco l’italiano
molto bene.
John conosce bene la matematica
perché l’ha studiata all’università.
(John knows math very well because he studied it in university)
Sapere: facts, skills
- Skills: (to know how to do
….) sport, music, reading, playing chess, etc.
- Facts: directions,
addresses, historical dates, facts about people, etc
Examples
FACTS:
Scusi, sa dove si
trova la stazione? (Excuse me, do you know where one finds the train station?
Or: do you know where the station is located?)
Non sapevo che Maria
ha lasciato Riccardo. (I did not know
that Maria left Riccardo)
SKILLS:
So suonare il pianoforte.
(I know how to play the piano)
Tu sai cantare molto
bene. (You know how to sing very well)
Mirella non sa
cucinare per niente. (Mirella does not
know how to cook at all)
